Preventatives for Cats

Keeping Your Cat (and Family) Protected

Heartworms may be one of the most deadly parasites in cats. Heartworm infection is transmitted by mosquitoes and attacks the lungs and heart. There is no approved treatment for adult heartworm infection. The only option is prevention. To learn more please visit www.knowheartworms.org.

Fleas are a nuisance for pet owners and a horrible discomfort to pets. Once established in the home, they can be very difficult to eradicate. Fleas can cause an allergic skin condition called Flea Allergy Dermatitis, and in extreme cases, life threatening anemia. Fleas can also transmit disease into the host such as tapeworm, which is an intestinal disease caused by the worm as it grows. For more information please visit http://www.cat-health-guide.org/catfleas.html

Ticks can infect cats with a malaria-like disease called cytauxzoonosis which is usually fatal and for which there is no treatment. All cats are vulnerable to ticks-even if they are considered “indoor” cats. In the course of normal grooming, cats can and often do lick ticks off their coats and into their home environments. To learn more please visit www.aspca.org/pet-care/cat-care/ticks.aspx
